'Aroeira-branca' [Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl. - Anacardiaceae] seed quality evaluation by the X-ray test Scientia Agricola
Machado,Cibele Ferreira; Cícero,Sílvio Moure.
'Aroeira-branca', an arboreal species of great ecological and economic importance, is seed propagated and presents limitations with respect to the availability of methods for seed quality evaluation. The X-ray test has been considered of potential value because it is accurate, quick and nondestructive. In this context, the objective of this work was to verify the possibility of this test to detect damage and/or abnormalities in aroeira-branca embryos, in an attempt to correlate these anomalies to germination. Four seed lots were collected in different locations in the southern region of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during 2001. The X-ray test consisted of submitting 100 seeds/lot to radiation (exposure of seeds to radiation of 13 kV/5 minutes) and...

Distribution update, conservation status and color in life of the rare Amazonian snake, Eutrachelophis papilio Zaher and Prudente 2019 (Serpentes: Xenodontini) Acta Amazonica
CITELI,Nathalie; DE-CARVALHO,Mariana; BRANDÃO,Reuber.
ABSTRACT The rare Amazonian snake Eutrachelophis papilio is known from only five individuals, from four localities, belonging to its type-series, the more recent collected over 10 years ago. Here, we expand its distribution and describe its color in life for the first time. We also provide an estimate of its distribution area using the minimum convex polygon method and identify the values of anthropic pressure within its known distribution range with the Human Footprint Index. The new occurrence is located 291 km from the nearest known locality and its distribution is associated with pristine forests. Considering its rarity, and the absence of demographic and biological data, we suggest that the species should be classified as Data Deficient by IUCN...

Organic carbon contents of three tree species in different spacing PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Behling, Alexandre; Sanquetta, Carlos Roberto; Caron, Braulio Otomar; Schimidt, Denise; Elli, Elvis Felipe; Corte, Ana Paula Dalla.
This study aimed to evaluate the content of organic carbon in plant parts (leaves, wood, twigs and bark) of forest species Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis Hill and Mimosa scabrella Benth, under different spacing between trees (2.0 m x 1.0 m, 2.0 m x 1.5 m, 3.0x1.0 m and 3.0 m x 1.5 m), one year after planting. It was also aimed to verify if the conversion factor of 50% can be applied. To determine the organic carbon it was used a carbon analyzer(C-144). The carbon content varied depending on the species, spacing and the part of the plant component used. It was observed that the factors: species, spacing, and parts of the plant are not independent. So, the carbon content measurements should be determined for each species and for each biomass...

Medeiros,André Dantas de; Araújo,Joyce de Oliveira; León,Manuel Jesús Zavala; Silva,Laércio Junio da; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos.
ABSTRACT Non-destructive and high performance analyses are highly desirable and important for assessing the quality of forest seeds. The aim of this study was to relate parameters obtained from semi-automated analysis of radiographs of Leucaena leucocephala seeds to their physiological potential by means of multivariate analysis. To do so, seeds from five lots collected from parent trees from the region of Viçosa, MG, Brazil, were used. The study was carried out through analysis of radiographic images of seeds, from which the percentage of damaged seeds (predation and fungi), and measurements of area, perimeter, circularity, relative density, and integrated density of the seeds were obtained. After the X-ray test, the seeds were tested for germination in...

Pacheco,Mauro Vasconcelos; Silva,Clarissa Santos da; Silveira,Tiago Madruga Telesca; Hölbig,Letícia dos Santos; Harter,Fábio Schaun; Villela,Francisco Amaral.
Schinus terebinthifolius is a native forest species which may be used in recuperating degraded areas and in urban afforestation. In order to evaluate the efficiency of methods for separating lots of S. terebinthifolius seeds into vigor levels, five lots of seeds were qualitatively evaluated for their moisture content, germination, first count, accelerated aging (the traditional and the saturated salt methods), germination speed index, average time of germination and seedling length and dry weight. The results showed that the tests of first germination count, accelerated aging at 41 ºC for 72 hours, average time of germination, seedling length and dry matter permitted the separation of S. terebinthifolius seeds into different vigor levels.

Plant regeneration from cotyledonary explants of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Scientia Agricola
Dibax,Roberson; Eisfeld,Cristiane de Loyola; Cuquel,Francine Lorena; Koehler,Henrique; Quoirin,Marguerite.
Breeding methods based on genetic transformation techniques need to be implemented for Eucalyptus camaldulensis to shorten the long breeding cycles and avoid manipulation of adult trees; that requires the development of plant regeneration protocols enabling development of plants from transformed tissues. The present work aimed to optimise the regeneration process already established for the species. Cotyledonary leaves of E. camaldulensis were cultured in MS medium supplemented with naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) combinations. The most efficient treatment for bud indirect regeneration (2.7 µmol L-1 NAA and 4.44 µmol L-1 BAP) was used for further experiments. When explants were kept in the dark during the first 30 days, the...

Seed imbibition and germination of Plathymenia reticulata Benth. (Fabaceae) affected by mercury: possible role of aquaporins Acta Botanica
Cardoso,Amanda Ávila; Borges,Eduardo Euclydes de Lima e; Souza,Genaina Aparecida de; Silva,Cristiane Jovelina da; Pires,Raquel Maria de Oliveira; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos.
ABSTRACTStudies that evaluate the physiological and biochemical mechanisms of germination within forest species are needed in order to improve our understanding of such processes. Mercury and dithiothreitol are indicated as important tools in studies that assess the activity of aquaporins during imbibition and germination of seeds. To investigate the alterations caused by mercury inPlathymenia reticulata seedsdifferent doses of mercury were used in the presence and absence of dithiothreitol. Mercury had a dose-dependent effect on the seeds; in the most dilute solutions mercury partially inhibited the imbibition process, whereas in the most concentrated solutions it caused the death of the embryos. A delay in the hydration of the seeds may have caused...

STRUCTURAL EVALUATION OF DAMAGE CAUSED BY HERBICIDE CLOMAZONE IN LEAVES OF ARBORESCENT SPECIES NATIVE TO BRAZIL Planta Daninha
CABRAL,C.M.; SANTOS,J.B.; FERREIRA,E.A.; COSTA,S.S.D.; DALVI,V.C.; FRANCINO,D.M.T..
ABSTRACT Herbicide clomazone is highly soluble in water, which increases the risk of leaching, resulting in contamination of sources of groundwater and waterways, affecting non-target organisms, with possible degradation of riparian areas. The objective of this work was to investigate the possible anatomical modifications of the leaf tissue of twelve arborescent species native to Brazil grown in soil contaminated by clomazone, in order to microscopically characterize leaf damage caused by the herbicide, and investigate whether the structural damage precedes visible damage. Through micro morphometrics, the thickness and the area occupied by the tissues were measured in a cross section of the leaves of the forest species: adaxial and abaxial epidermis,...
